If you want big-city night views, a choice of beaches and direct international flights, Busan is the better fit. If you want a one-night trip from Seoul that takes in both the sea and Seoraksan, Sokcho is. Both are good seaside cities; what decides it is the kind of trip you have in mind.
Running a mulhoe restaurant in Sokcho (mulhoe is Korean chilled raw-fish soup), I often meet guests who tell me, “We were torn between here and Busan.” Ask them why they chose Sokcho and the answers are much the same: it’s closer to Seoul, it works as an overnight trip, and Seoraksan is here. I’ve been to Busan many times myself, and I have no reason to run either city down. The figures below, such as travel times and population, come from sources I checked.
Busan and Sokcho at a glance
Busan is a big city of about 3.2 million people; Sokcho is a small port town of fewer than 80,000. They are both on the coast, but they make for very different trips.
| Feature | Busan | Sokcho |
|---|---|---|
| From Seoul (public transport) | KTX from Seoul Station about 2 h 30 min; express bus about 4 h 20 min | Express bus from Gangnam 2 h 10 min to 2 h 30 min; no train |
| Size | Population about 3.2 million | Population under 80,000 |
| Sea | Several beaches, including Haeundae and Gwangalli | East Sea beaches, including Sokcho Beach |
| Mountain | Geumjeongsan National Park (Godangbong, about 801 m) | Seoraksan National Park (Daecheongbong, 1,708 m) |
| Average January temperature | Between 3 and 4°C | Around 0°C |
| International airport | Gimhae International Airport (many direct international flights) | Yangyang International Airport, to the south (preparing to resume scheduled international flights, per 2026 reports) |
| Best suited to | City breaks, night views, two nights or more | One night and two days, sea and mountains together |
Population figures are from the 2026 resident registration statistics, temperatures are the Korea Meteorological Administration’s 1991–2020 climate normals, Gimhae passenger numbers are from Korea Airports Corporation, Geumjeongsan National Park opened in March 2026, and the Yangyang International Airport information is based on 2026 reports. The Busan travel times are approximate, based on the KTX from Seoul Station and the express bus from Seoul’s Gyeongbu terminal. Check train and bus times and fares with Korail and the express bus booking sites before you set off.
Which is closer to Seoul?
Journey times are similar, and Sokcho can be slightly quicker. Busan is about 2 hours 30 minutes by KTX from Seoul Station; Sokcho is 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes from the express bus terminal in Gangnam. Buses to Sokcho from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal also take a little over two hours.
The difference is how you travel. The KTX runs right into Busan Station in the city centre, so Busan is an easy train journey. Sokcho still has no railway station. A line linking Chuncheon and Sokcho is under construction, but there were reports in July 2026 that its target opening date is slipping. For now, you come by express bus or by car.
Compare the two by express bus and the gap widens: about 4 hours 20 minutes from Seoul to Busan, against 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes from Gangnam to Sokcho. I’ve written up the bus route in detail in How to get from Seoul to Sokcho.
What kind of trip suits Busan better?
If you want to spend several days on big-city nights, a string of beaches and market food, choose Busan. There is far too much spread across Busan to see in a single day.
- Haeundae: Busan’s signature wide stretch of sand, ringed by high-rise towers
- Gwangalli: the beach where the lights of Gwangan Bridge hang over the water at night
- Gamcheon Culture Village: colourful hillside lanes that began as a settlement for people displaced by the Korean War
- Jagalchi Market: Busan’s big seafood market
Busan is also easier if you’re flying straight in from abroad. Gimhae International Airport handled more than 10 million international passengers in 2025, with plenty of direct flights to Japan and Southeast Asia. And if you want a seaside that’s less cold in winter, that points to Busan too: its average January temperature is a few degrees higher than Sokcho’s.
Busan has mountains as well. Geumjeongsan became Korea’s 24th national park on 3 March 2026, and its highest peak, Godangbong, stands at about 801 m. You can walk mountain trails close to the city centre.
What kind of trip suits Sokcho better?
If you want a one-night trip from Seoul that combines the sea with a big mountain, choose Sokcho. Seorakdong, the village at the entrance to Seoraksan, is 20 to 25 minutes by car from the seafront town centre, so you can see Seoraksan in the morning and walk by the sea in the afternoon, all in one day.
Seoraksan is a big mountain: Daecheongbong, its highest peak, is 1,708 m. Even without hiking, you can ride the cable car up to the viewing area at the top station and look out over the ridges; the Gwongeumseong fortress site is a further 15 to 20 minutes’ walk along a rocky path from the top station. It is especially lovely with the autumn leaves and in winter snow.
Because the town is small, distances are short too. You can walk from the express bus terminal to Sokcho Beach, and the fish market and Abai Village are a little over 10 minutes by car from the beach, so take a bus or a taxi. I’ve set out a route for one night and two days in Sokcho in 1 night 2 days.
How are the seas different?
Sokcho faces the East Sea, while Busan sits where the East Sea meets the South Sea. Under the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency’s long-standing definition, Oryukdo marks the boundary: the Haeundae side to the east is the East Sea, and the Yeongdo and Jagalchi side to the west is the South Sea. That said, different bodies draw the line slightly differently.
In winter the waves at Sokcho roll in big and bracing. Sokcho Beach, right in front of our restaurant, is packed on New Year’s Day with people who come to watch the first sunrise of the year. Busan’s beaches sit right beside the city, and the pleasure there is seeing the sea and the lit-up towers together at night.
Busan or Sokcho: which should you choose?
For a city break of two nights or more, Busan; for one night from Seoul with both the sea and the mountains, Sokcho. It comes down to how long you have and the scenery you want.
- Two nights or more, and you want city nights and several neighbourhoods → Busan
- Flying straight in from abroad, or combining Korea with Japan or Southeast Asia → Busan
- You want a seaside that is less cold in winter → Busan
- One night from Seoul, and you want the sea and a big mountain together → Sokcho
- You’d rather get around a small town with short distances → Sokcho
We run a business in Sokcho, so it’s true that part of us wants to recommend Sokcho. Even so, if the points above lean towards Busan, Busan is the right call. For a comparison with other nature destinations near Seoul, see Nature day trips from Seoul.
If you come to Sokcho
Our restaurant is a 3-minute walk from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal, right in front of Sokcho Beach. You can step off the bus and walk over with your luggage.
Mulhoe is said to have started as something east coast fishermen ate aboard their boats before it became restaurant food. I tell that story in The history of mulhoe.
